Photo Guide: How to Choose the Best Photo for Your Custom Bobblehead

Every custom bobblehead begins with a photo—and the better the reference photo, the more accurately we can capture the features, expression, hairstyle, and little details that make your person or pet feel like themselves.

You do not need a professional photoshoot. A clear, natural photo taken with your phone is usually perfect. Use this guide before uploading your image so we can create a keepsake you will love.

The Quick Checklist

Before you upload, make sure your photo is:

  • Clear and in focus

  • Well lit, preferably with natural daylight

  • Taken from the front or at a slight angle

  • Showing the full face clearly

  • Free from heavy filters, sunglasses, masks, or shadows

  • Large enough to see facial details

  • Focused on one person or one pet whenever possible

If we can clearly see them, we can make them feel more like them.

Choose a Clear, Front-Facing Photo

The best reference photo shows the face looking toward the camera, with the entire head visible from hairline to chin. A slight natural smile works beautifully, but any expression is welcome as long as facial features are easy to see.

For the most accurate result, please avoid photos where the face is turned far to one side, looking downward, covered by hair, or partially outside the frame.

Best choice: A clear head-and-shoulders photo taken at eye level.
Still works: A high-quality photo taken at a gentle three-quarter angle.
Less ideal: A distant group photo, a profile-only image, or a selfie taken from a very high or very low angle.

Use Bright, Natural Light

Good lighting helps us see the shape of the face, eye color, hairstyle, skin tone, and other distinctive details.

Natural daylight near a window is ideal. Try to face the window rather than stand with the window behind you. Soft outdoor shade also works well.

Please avoid:

  • Strong backlighting that turns the face into a shadow

  • Very dark rooms

  • Colored party or club lighting

  • Harsh flash directly on the face

  • Strong beauty filters that change skin texture or facial shape

A simple, evenly lit photo is always more useful than a dramatic one.

Make Sure the Face Is Not Covered

We want to see the small details that make every custom figure personal: eye shape, eyebrows, smile, beard, hairstyle, glasses, and more.

Please choose a photo without:

  • Sunglasses or tinted glasses

  • Face masks

  • Hats that hide most of the hair

  • Hands, phones, flowers, or objects covering the face

  • Heavy shadows over the eyes

  • Beauty filters that noticeably change facial features

Regular prescription glasses are usually fine. If glasses are an important part of their everyday look, include a clear photo showing them.

One Person or Pet Per Photo

For individual bobbleheads, upload one clear photo of the person or pet you would like us to create.

For couples, families, wedding parties, or teams, please upload a clear reference photo for each person whenever possible. Individual photos help us capture every face accurately, especially when people are small or partially hidden in a group photo.

For group sets, label your uploaded images clearly if your ordering process allows it. For example:

This helps us match each face to the right outfit, pose, and position.

Show Us Their Style

A face photo is the most important part, but additional photos can help us capture the details that make the figure truly personal.

If possible, include one or more extra reference photos that show:

  • Hairstyle from the side or back

  • Favorite outfit or uniform

  • Accessories such as glasses, earrings, a watch, or a hat

  • A meaningful item, hobby, profession, or sport

  • Pet coat colors, markings, collar, or favorite bandana

  • Wedding attire, bouquet colors, or other special-event details

For example, a clear face photo plus a photo of a graduation gown, a nurse uniform, a favorite football jersey, or a beloved dog’s collar can make the final keepsake feel much more personal.

Tips for Pet Photos

Pets have just as much personality as people, and clear photos help us capture their markings, ears, expression, and signature look.

For the best custom pet bobblehead, please upload:

  • One clear photo of your pet facing the camera

  • One side-view photo if possible

  • A photo in bright natural light

  • A close-up where eyes, ears, nose, and fur markings are visible

  • A photo of any special collar, tag, or accessory you would like included

Avoid photos taken from far away, in dim rooms, behind glass, or while your pet is moving quickly.

Photos We May Need to Confirm

We can work with many types of images, but we may contact you if the photo is too dark, blurry, distant, filtered, or does not show the face clearly enough.

You may need to send a new photo if:

  • The face is out of focus

  • The person is very small in a group photo

  • The photo is a screenshot with low image quality

  • The face is covered by sunglasses, hair, a mask, or deep shadows

  • The image uses a strong filter or AI face-editing effect

  • The uploaded file is too small to see important details

A better photo means a better likeness—and a more meaningful final piece.

Photo Upload Tips

For best results, upload the original image from your phone whenever possible instead of a screenshot, a photo saved from social media, or an image sent repeatedly through messaging apps.

Use JPG, JPEG, PNG, or WebP files. Keep your image under 20 MB. A clear image with a larger resolution is better than a tiny compressed file; Shopify supports uploads up to 5,000 × 5,000 pixels and 20 MB for store images.
